Socking it to myself

I needed to take a break from all the heavy-duty stuff I've been writing about lately, so I thought I would devote today's blog to my obsessive-compulsive complex.

Yes, I’ll admit that I used to have a bit of an obsession. It wasn’t the usual sort of obsession, like about sex for example. I mean, that’s normal, isn’t it? No, my obsession was about socks.

An aspect of that obsession was that my socks had to match my shirt. Red shirt mean red socks; blue meant blue socks (of the same hue), and I was even secure enough in my masculinity that I wore pink socks with a pink shirt (when pink was voguish, even for males).

It was a joy for me to go into a haberdashery or department store and scope out the displays of socks. And, even though I had socks galore, I was always up for buying more. Well, that’s OK. Some men spend their money on cars, fine wines and beautiful women. I did that, too, way back when, but socks were my genuine vice of choice.

There is a bit of logic to this illogic. I'm a Pisces. Pisceans have lousy feet. I have lousy feet, so foot-comfort is vital to my sense of well-being.

Thoughts about my OC sock acquisitions came to mind this morning when I was dressing and I donned a favored old pair of socks. Oh, they’re not yet worn out and I have a genuine affection for this pair. But, as I looked in my sock drawer – and I have an entire dresser drawer devoted to this item of apparel even now – I realized I have some socks that I hardly ever wear, but don’t have the heart to eject them. For whatever bizarre reason I find a security in knowing that my sock drawer is well stocked.

So, I have socks with tropical fish on them, and socks with black bears on them, socks with a Boticelli nude on them, and a pair of very old socks with a psychedelic pattern on them. They’re worn, but I don’t have the heart to throw them out. I also have dress socks, and cold weather socks. I have a wonderful woollen pair of work socks that are kind of fluffy wintry wear.

My favorite brands of socks can only be found when I’m traveling. So, if I’m in the US I stock up on Gold Toes. They’re wonderful and last forever. If in the UK I head straight to Marks and Spencers and acquire some of their product to take home. Second only to Gold Toes in my esteem.

I suppose you might consider my sock obsession to be a kind of fetish. But, it’s a harmless one. It’s not at all as antisocial as stealing women’s undies from their clothes baskets at the Laundromat, and it’s not as costly as the aforementioned fine wines, so I’m not troubled by it. Added to which, I am nowhere near as obsessed with matching shirt and socks, so I think I may be cured. Sort of.

What about you? Do you have any collection obsessions?

That's odd, but cute. My ex says the same thing about Gold Toe socks, by the way. I don't have any obsessive collections, but I am extrememly partuclar about bedding - soft pillows, high thread count Egyption cotten sheets. Just at my home - I'm not fussy when I'm at a hotel or someone's house. And I have developed a deep attachment to olive oil soap.

Hmmm. I also hate my feet and am very picky about socks. I didn't realize those two things went together, but now that you've pointed it out, it makes perfect sense. My "collection" is T-shirts. Because I buy them at events and when I travel, they are also souvenirs, so I can't throw them out. And I never even wear t-shirts in public! I only wear them around the house.

I have two pairs of tie-dyed socks, quite different from each other. I switched one for the other so I now have two mismatched pairs -- but very funky.

Wow. You're so cool! Could you post some photos of your sock collection, please? It sounds awesome.

Collections - everything. I have almost a psychological problem with letting go of things. It's getting better, though.

I have to say, Ian, I admire the way you slipped the word "haberdashery" into a sentence :-)

I am funny about socks (that's what I hear...from my kids) I almost always wear black socks with pants, unless I am wearing athletic shoes - then it's only white socks. I have no middle ground when it comes to socks.

One day, an archaeologist will gig up your wardrobe and will attach some sort of religious significance to your plethora of socks. Perhaps your idea of an afterlife requires a long journey on foot and you will need many pairs to complete your ascendance to Nirvana. You should buy more and catalogue them to really keep them guessing.

It's really hard to buy men's socks with great images on them here. I often look when I am abroad, they seem to be more adventurous about socks. I bought my son some with tarantulas on them once.

Ian,

Obviously, you're a man with socks appeal.

I'm Cancerian, no wonder we get on well, both water signs. I'm afraid my socks are pretty dull, mainly black. I like being barefoot best with lilac toe nails.

But my obsession is time keeping!

How absolutely wonderful and quirky. I didn't have you figured as the OC type. It seems the perfect obsession for you.

My obsession: journals. When I see the perfect journal I have to get it - even if I already have more than I'll probably use in a lifetime.

Oh, and lipstick. I'm physically incapable of passing up lipstick. Cheap, expensive, glosses, satins, I love 'em all. I'm an equal opportunity lipstick whore.

My best friend is a Pisces and has also had foot trouble...I had no idea it was a common trait amongst you!

I don't have any obsessive traits. Except books. Must. Have. Books.

But I can also easily give them away, so I guess that doesn't count as an obsession, really.

Come to think of it...I guess I really don't have any OCD issues!

Socks! Oh that's funny! But having good socks is important if you're going over someone's house and they like you to take off your shoes.

I don't have any collecting obsessions at all. I have too hard of a time spending money.

Hi! New here. Great post, I love socks (especially striped knee highs), but one thing I am OCD with is twist ties - I cannot throw them away! I have drawers full of twist ties! Drives my husband crazy. I have other foibles, but I'll just leave it with the twist ties.

I have for years been buying men's gold toe socks, because of the durability.
The ones with pictures on them are art. Can't be throwing away art, now, can we??
I guess I am silly about paper, and pencils that feel right when I draw with them. I have noticed a quickening of the pulse in office supply stores.
Socks appeal! Very funny, dumdad :)

A harmless collection, & also useful!
One of my sons is Pisces, & I always tell him his feet resemble seal's flippers. He has trouble getting comfortable footwear, & if he finds a pair he likes he buys 2 pairs.
My collective traits are wildly odd, but I just love dolls most of all.

i've only recently become enamoured with socks. previously, i only bought plain white ones because the only time i wore them was when i was at the gym, but a few years ago i was forced to buy some knee high red and white striped socks to go along with my Pippi Longstocking costume and i realised how much fun they are - kinda like lingerie if you're wearing long pants - you KNOW there's something fun under there, but does anyone else?

as for my collections, i collect photos and postcards. i *LOVE* postcards.

ah, this post has reminded me of something i saw right after the 9/11 attacks (sorry in advance that this comment is so long), anyway ...

i had taken a young charge of mine to the library to check out some books and afterwards we were chilling out on the playground adjacent to said library. there was only one other child there with his mother who was decked out in a full burqua. of course, these were some emotionally charged days, and i'll admit to watching her, enthralled and ever so curious about these people who were being vilified simply because they happen to worship differently than the majority of americans. her little boy started getting really wound up near the middle level of the playscape, and as she was pregnant, it was difficult to run up to it to catch him so she stretched a looooong way to reach up to grab him as he was about to fall. and you know, as she stretched and her black burqua moved up to reveal a few inches of ankle and calf, i saw that she was wearing BRIGHT! NEON! GREEN! socks. and you know, i thought to myself that she's just as american as i am. i cherish that moment. :)

hope you're doing well, Ian.

Socks, huh? Well, I actually find that very interesting. It doesn't veer into "strange" territory, just one of those things that makes you unique.

I am addicted to lavender & olive oil soaps. Also, if I collect anything, it's unusual art pieces reflecting either snowmen or eggs. Because I love snow and we all come from eggs. But years pass between acquirings. It needs to speak to me! lol

You are harmless, my friend, relax.

I am obsessed with my books. I have never thrown away a book in my entire life and to my Sweetie's great despair, I keep adding to them, even though a second grade math student could easily calculate that I will be as dead as Jacob Marley by the time I have read all of them.

And of course, they are organized chronologically, for literature, and by topic for non-fiction.

And catalogued.

I also have an obsession for collecting interesting newspaper and magazine clips.

As a teenager, I saved all the news stories about the fall of the Berlin Wall, and I still have them.
